The manual pointed very specifically to the various devices: iSight camera, iSight camera "On Air" indicator, ambient light sensor were behind the front panel. I discovered the problem when I couldn't be heard when I made a Skype call.
After the call recorded my sound, it played it back and to my surprise it sounded perfect. It wasn't until I downloaded the new "Messages" beta (mountain lion OS) that i realized the problem, as I don't use skype and hadn't really used iChat in a long time. It is very tiny and easy to cover/block; in my case I covered the mic with clay figures from my grandauther.
