If this didn't help another workaround for a broken home button is with Assistive Touch, which enables an onscreen tappable virtual home button instead. I tried Ezekiel's quick fix and it worked!! Then I dried it off with tissue and blew a bit of air around the button. Clicking on it will give you the option to go to the home screen, plus many other options. the ones you get when you swipe up and down...
